One of my favorite hacks for adding confidence intervals to other people’s estimates after the fact is by looking carefully at the precision they provide. The bigger the unit, the more uncertainty. This doesn’t always work, but it’s often a good indicator. As I commonly tell my teams, “dates specified in months slip by months; dates specified in days slip by days.”
